Virus are most common by not having an Antivirus program, or not having it working or up to date. Downloading music or games from the web is another way. Also clicking on pop ups is a bad idea. This video tells more about avoiding viruses.

The best solution to a slow computer is to reboot. Sometimes people do not restart or turn off their computer for days and weeks. It makes it slow. So restart daily or turn in off at night to get the best perfomance.
