A Web Filter is a program that filters out dangerous websites. Dangerous websites fall into many categories including pornography, drugs, and much more.  The Web Filter is called “K9 Web Protection”.  It is a free Internet filtering and control solution for the home. K9 puts YOU in control of the Internet so you can protect your kids.  You can access it by clickin on this link.   http://www1.k9webprotection.com/ After you have downloaded the program, it will ask you to register with an email address.  Then K9 Web Protection sends you a key to register your new installation.  It is easy and safe and has many features and controls for parents.  With the master password that you will set, you can override any of the features.   I like it and use it in my own home.  If you need assistance with this or any computer related problems, give us a call at aGeeko.com.    801.822-2086 –  Steve Morris

Don’t Buy Refurbished

Sunday, May 17th, 2009 admin No Comments »

Yesterday I spent 8 hours on a computer repair that was avoidable.   The client had purchased a refurbished computer from Best Buy without know that it was a refurbished computer.   Refurbished means it gave some one else problems and they returned it.   Best Buy reboxed it and sold it again after looking at it.    The client didn’t know it was refurbished until I told him about the sticker on the bottom of the computer.

This computer was repaired because it had a bad virus.   The info on the drive as so important that we installed another hard drive into the case and installed windows and set it up.   It was then that we put the old hard drive in the case and noticed the motherboard would not recognize any drives put into the 3rd and 4th SATA slots.   The motherboard would not see it in CMOS or in windows.  Additionally the computer would not boot but just hanged on every other reboot using two different hard drives.

Unfortunately this was a key computer to the client and it had hours of software installation and configuration that had to be redone as part of the computer repair.   So don’t buy refurbished because you are buying someone else’s problems, and the vendors do not take much if any time to see about fixing it before selling it again.

Why I like MS Publisher

I use MS Publisher for doing my family letter each month.   It is easy to work with and has many features.  I like to mix photos from the family along with text describing what we did that month.   Publisher is better than Word because you can put a photo anywhere you want to and move text anywhere you want too.   It is an open page that has frames of text and photos that can be moved to any place and resized too.   It has features for clip art and word art that allows you to make banners etc.

I then print it to adobe Acrobat and it makes it a document that allows the rest of the family to open it even if they only have the free adobe acrobat reader program.  It also makes it smaller in size for emailing.     I then print out one copy on photo paper and put it in a family album that shows what we have done that month.

Motherboards are all Different

Today I was repairing a computer that the motherboard was completely dead on.   It just beeped.  We removed all drives  and cards and it still beeped.  We replaced the motherboard with new and the repair was finished.  The hard part is knowing what motherboard to get.  Common terms for motherboards in the Intel brand include the socket 775 and socket 478 for the Intel brands.

You must also line up the right RAM memory on the motherboard.   Some motherboards support DDR2 others DDR3, others SDRAM.   So both the CPU Socket and the RAM must work together.  When repairing a computer’s motherboard you must also worry about the slots on the motherboard.   If you have a video card that needs a PCI express slot, you better get a motherboard with a PCI express slot.  Older motherboard have AGP slots for video.   So Repairing can get complicatied by lining up old parts with new.  Our sister company also repairs computers at home and in offices.   Go to www.pcrescuetechs.com

They also repair computers in Utah.  Both business, office and home computers along with networks etc.
