An Operating System (OS) is the first software you put on a new hard drive. It starts up and finds the different parts of hardware it is using. It is called booting up because it takes it a minute to discover the different video card, network card, sound card and make it work in the program. OS are named XP, Vista, 7 and more. This is different from MS Office which is an application that runs on top of the OS. Office is a word processor, spreadsheet etc.
