IDE or SATA Hard Drives
I recently was repairing the computer of a fellow. He brought me his old computer and asked me to install a new hard drive. The old computer was a Pentium 4 – 1.7 ghz with an 80 GB hard drive. The new hard drive was a 300 GB hard drive. In the end, the motherboard would not recognize the 300 GB hard drive. It was to big for the motherboard. So then he purchased a new computer and wanted the 300 GB hd installed as a secondary hard drive. One problem, the new computer was all SATA. This means the connectors from the motherboard are the newer slim straps instead of the old fashioned wide gray cables. The wide gray cables are called IDE and the slim straps are called SATA – Serial ATA - So when you purchase a new computer you will probably find it to be SATA while your old PC is probably IDE. Knowing this can help in upgrading or adding old to new.
